Overview

The field of multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuroimmunology has seen remarkable advancements in diagnostics and therapies over the past two decades, significantly transforming the management of the disease. These developments have provided hope and improved quality of life for many patients and their families. However, Orange County continues to face a critical shortage of MS specialists, with access to care and therapies remaining a challenge.

This Continuing Medical Education (CME) program is designed to educate Hoag clinicians, therapists, and ancillary providers on the latest evidence-based practices in the initial assessment, individualized treatment plans, and long-term care for patients with MS. We are honored to welcome our distinguished guest speaker, Dr. Jeffrey D. Cohen, a world-renowned expert in multiple sclerosis. Dr. Cohen serves as Director of the Mellen Center for Multiple Sclerosis at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. List risk factors of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and the recent advances identifying MS risk and early detection
  2. Explain new concepts in MS, including PIRA (Progressive Disease Independent of Relapse Activity) and "Smoldering MS"
  3. Describe current practices in the diagnosis of MS, advances in both neuroimaging and biomarkers for the diagnosis and follow up of the disease
  4. Explain the current approach of treatment paradigms for different phases of MS and managing progressive versus relapsing MS, including updates about new therapies and stem cell therapies
