This knowledge-based, one-day conference will focus on comprehensive and innovative clinical and psychosocial approaches for management of prediabetes and diabetes across the lifespan, emerging technologies in insulin delivery and glucose monitoring, gestational diabetes, and weight management in the treatment of diabetes. 

Diabetes: What's New? What's Next? is designed for diabetes educators, physicians, registered nurses, registered dietitians, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other health care providers interested in staying up to date on current practices of care for their patients with diabetes and other related conditions.


Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Define intermittent fasting, a low carb diet, meal sequence and a plant-based diet
  2. State one pro and one con of intermittent fasting, a low carb diet, meal sequence and a plant-based diet for weight loss
  3. Navigate patient selection for the various classes of anti-obesity medications
  4. Review practical considerations for managing common side effects of anti-obesity medications
  5. Explain relationship between Binge Eating Disorder (BED) and diabetes/metabolic disease
  6. Explain diagnostic criteria for BED
  7. Review potential treatment options for BED
  8. Evaluate literature to assess the benefits of CGM technology in the hospital setting
  9. List when CGMs were first used and when the FDA approved its use in pregnancy
  10. List the name of the 1 major trial responsible for approval of CGM in pregnancy
  11. List the names of at least 2 approved CGM devices in the U.S. for use in pregnancy
  12. Assess current use of CGM in patients with diabetes
  13. Identify patient populations and care models who would benefit from CGM use
  14. Identify and assess recent literature for future use of CGM in special populations
  15. Summarize the latest automated insulin delivery systems
  16. Summarize interoperability standards between controllers, pumps, and sensors
  17. Compare and contrast the nuanced differences in the systems and the ideal patient populations for each.
  18. Illustrate the patient journey beginning at diagnosis
  19. Define common terminology used among patients
  20. Discuss the mental health barriers surrounding patients with diabetes

The Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number 10977, for 5.5 contact hours. RNs must retain this document for 4 years after the activity concludes.

The Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria. This live activity is designated for 5.5 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.


Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR): CDR Credentialed Practitioners will receive 5.5 Continuing Professional Education units (CPEUs) for completion of this activity. Completion of this RD/DTR prefession-specific or IPCE activity awards CPEUs (One IPCE credit = One CPEU). If the activity is dietietics-related but not targeted to RDs or DTRs, CPEUs may be claimed which are commensurate with participation in contact hours (One 60 minute hour = 1 CPEU. RDs and DTRs are to select activity type 102 in their Activity Log. Sphere and Competency selection is at the learner’s discretion.


Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists: To satisfy the requirements for renewal of certification for the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education (CBDCE), continuing education activities must be diabetes related and approved by a provider on the CBDCE list of Approved Providers (www.cbdce.org). CBDCE does not approve continuing education. The Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists is on the CBDCE list of Approved Providers.
